Many of St. Louis' top attractions are located in Forest Park. After you've taken in the Zoo, Science Center and museums, make time to visit the Jewel Box greenhouse and conservatory. The 50 foot glass walls and art deco design make a beautiful backdrop for the hundreds of flowers and exotic plants inside. The Jewel Box is one of two places in Forest Park listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Location, Hours, Admission:

The Jewel Box is located at the intersection of Wells and McKinley Drives in Forest Park. When entering the park from Hampton Avenue, take a right on Wells Drive to the roundabout and you'll see the Jewel Box on your left. The greenhouse is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is $1 a person, but everyone gets in free on Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon.

What You'll See:

The Jewel Box is filled with hundreds of plants and flowers year round. There is a large fountain in the middle of the greenhouse with flowers spreading out in all directions. There are also seasonal displays throughout the year, including Easter lilies in the spring and pointsettias at Christmas time.

The grounds outside the Jewel Box are also worth exploring. In warm months, you can stroll through rose gardens and lily ponds. In colder months, visit the statuary garden with its a statue of St. Francis of Assisi and a memorial to veterans of the Korean War.

Wedding Ceremonies:

The Jewel Box is one of the most popular places to get married in St. Louis. Recent renovations have improved the site even more. There is catering room, a large bride’s room and new restrooms for weddings and other private events. The floral displays can be moved and changed as needed. The cost to book the Jewel Box for a wedding is $1000 and reservations can be made up to two years in advance. For more information, call the St. Louis City Parks Division at (314) 289-5389.

Flora Conservancy:

Like many of the top attractions in St. Louis, the Jewel Box depends on volunteers to help keep the greenhouse up and running. The Flora Conservancy of Forest Park is a not-for-profit organization that works to maintain the plants and floral displays at the Jewel Box and throughout the park. Volunteers help plant flowers on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., at various locations in the park. To learn more about volunteering, call (314) 289-5323 or (314) 53-FLORA.
