From Murdoch Perk, walk north to Devonshire Avenue and turn right. On the corner you'll see Manzos Importing Co., an ethnic grocery and deli specializing in Italian, Greek and Middle-Eastern foods. Located a good dozen blocks from St. Louis famous Italian neighborhood, The Hill, Manzos has had to work hard to earn respect as an Italian grocer. But with more than 50 years in business, Manzos regularly draws diehard Italian-Americans off The Hill for its wide variety of homemade salsiccias.
At Manzos you can buy a hot salsiccia sandwich or purchase a shrink-wrapped pack of half-a-dozen to cook at home. Flavors range from traditional or spicy to seasonal specialties such as cheese and tomato.
Locals certainly stop by Manzos for the salsiccias, but they also come for its choice of cheeses, Italian wines, Greek olives and a large selection of imported foodstuffs. Many of its products, such as its fresh spices or locally made pastas, are much less expensive than similar products at local grocery store chains. With prices like this, why not pick up some fresh mozzarella, a little prosciutto and one of their ready-made pizza crusts for an upcoming dinner?
