Just two short blocks north on Macklind is Home Eco, billed by the owners as St. Louis’ first environmentally friendly home products store. This truly unique shop is the epitome of “think globally, act locally.” Owners Terry Winkelmann and Phil Judd opened Home Eco in 2005 with the mission of giving St. Louisans an alternative to traditional commercial products such as household cleaners, paper products, toiletries and gardening supplies.

But Home Eco is more than just a “green” general store. With an entire section devoted to solar panels and environmentally friendly appliances, a visit to Home Eco is a must for anyone that has considered reducing their dependence on the grid. If you’re not quite ready for a complete energy makeover, Home Eco is also a great place to find books on gardening, handmade jewelry, pottery and even jeans made from hemp.
