Free is the way to go in St. Louis this summer. Whether it's concerts, movies or visits to some of the area's top attractions, here's information on the best free stuff to do in summer 2009 in St. Louis.

Free Movies

  • Frontyard Features - popular movies shown at outdoor locations throughout the St. Louis area. May - October
  • Wehrenberg Theatres Family Summer Series - kid friendly movies shown on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at nine local Weherenberg Theatres. June 3 - August 6
  • Movies in the Park - free movies one night a month this summer at City Centre Park in St. Peters. June 26, July 24 & August 21

Free Concerts

  • Live on the Levee - three weekends of free concerts under the Gateway Arch in downtown St. Louis. Headliners include Sonic Youth, Gretchen Wilson and Lupe Fiasco. Plus, every night closes with a big fireworks finale. July 17 - August 1
  • Jungle Boogie at the Zoo - free Friday night concerts at the Zoo's Central Plaza, featuring local and nationally known musicians like the Ralph Butler Band, Kim Massie and Hudson and the HooDoo Cats. May 22 - September 4 (No concert on June 19)
  • Twilight Tuesdays - bring a blanket or lawn chair to the north lawn of the Missouri History Museum for performances by Motown Revue, Dr. Zhivegas and more. Concerts start at 6:30 p.m. and last for about two hours. April 28 - June 9
  • Whitaker Music Festival - outdoor concerts held each Wednesday night for ten weeks in the beautiful setting of the Missouri Botanical Garden. Musicians this year include Peter Martin, the St. Louis Stompers and Anita Rosamond. Garden admission is free after 5 p.m. The concerts start at 7:30 p.m. June 3 - August 5
  • Gateway Festival Orchestra - classical favorites from the world's great composers performed on Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. at Brookings Quadrangle at Washington University. July 12, 19 & 26
  • Sunday Serenades & Musical Mondays - The Compton Heights Concert Band performs Sundays in Francis Park and Mondays in Tower Grove Park. Guest performers include world champion whistler David Morris and 8-year-old trumpet prodigy Geoffrey Gallante. June 28 - August 3
  • Carondelet Summer Concerts - a wide variety of musicians, including the Bob Kuban Band, Waterloo German Band and Soulard Blues Band perform Sunday evening concerts at 6 p.m. in Carondelet Park. June 7 - August 23

Get in Free to Top Attractions

  • St. Louis Zoo - Of course admission to the Zoo is always free, but each day from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., the Children's Zoo, the Conservation Carousel, the Stingrays at Carribean Cove and other special exhibits are also free. May 22 - September 7
  • The Muny - the back 1,500 seats at the Muny in Forest Park are free on a first come, first served basis for all seven shows each season. June 15 - August 9
  • The Magic House - St. Louis' top childrens museum has free admission for families on the third Friday of the month from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. June 19, July 17, August 21
