Real or fake? I'm talking about Christmas trees, of course. If your family has a tradition of getting a real tree every year, St. Louis has some good places to go. Here are the top Christmas tree farms and other places to get a real tree in the St. Louis area.

Pea Ridge Forest

Pea Ridge Forest is a family-run tree farm near Hermann, Missouri. Visitors can cut their own Scotch Pines or pick from a variety of pre-cut trees. There's also a gift shop and snack bar, and Santa often stops by for a visit. Pea Ridge Forest is open from 9 a.m. to dark each day beginning the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Heritage Valley Farm

Heritage Valley Farm near Washington, Missouri, goes all out for the holidays. The farm has Canaan Fir and White Pine trees for visitors to chop down. You can also find wreaths and decorative greenery. Heritage Valley is open on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Christmas Traditions Tree Farm is located in Warren County, near Wright City. The farm offers pre-cut Balsam and Fraser Firs, along with a limited supply of cut-your-own Scotch and White Pines. There are also hay and pony rides, decorations and unique holiday gifts. Christmas Traditions Tree Farm is open on weekend from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Daniken Tree Farm

Daniken Farm near Greenville, Illinois, has 60 acres of Christmas trees to choose from. The farm sells popular varieties like Canaan Fir, Scotch Pine and White Pine. There's also a gift shop, hayrides and visits from Santa. Daniken Farm is open every day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Eckert's Orchards

You'll find all kinds of things growing during the year at Eckert's Orchards. In winter, Eckert's offers cut-your-own and pre-cut Christmas trees. For cut-your-own White and Scotch Pines, head to the Millstadt location. For a large selection of pre-cut trees, Belleville is the best bet. Christmas trees are available daily beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Mills Apple Farm

Don't let the name fool you, Mills Apple Farm sells more than just apples. The farm near Marine, Illinois, has homegrown Scotch Pines and pre-cut Balsam Firs. The trees are available beginning in the day after Thanksgiving. Mills Apple Farm is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sullivan Farms

Sullivan Farms operates five Christmas tree lots in St. Louis and St. Charles counties. There are a variety of pre-cut trees including Balsam Fir, Scotch Pine and Colorado Blue Spruce.
