Anyone who wants to see holiday lights in Alton, Illinois, should head to Rock Spring Park for Christmas Wonderland. Each year, The park is decorated with more than two million colorful lights to celebrate the Christmas season.

Dates and Times:

Christmas Wonderland opens each year after Thanksgiving and closes in late December. In 2013, Christmas Wonderland is open nightly from November 29 through December 29. The display is open on weekdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on weekends from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Christmas Wonderland is a drive through display, but there is a special walk through night on Monday, December 2, where only foot traffic is allowed.

Admission Fees:

Admission is $7 per car. For vehicles with ten or more people, the cost is $1 per person. Christmas Wonderland also offers carriage rides through the display on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Carriages are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Carriage rides cost $30 for the first person and $5 for each additional person. What You'll See:

Each year, a group of volunteers called the Grandpa Gang strings the millions of lights at Christmas Wonderland. The display stretches out over a mile and a half of the park. There are dozens of colorful scenes including a cascading waterfall, lighted tunnels, a snowman village, laser display, light wrapped trees and more. Visiting Christmas Wonderland is a tradition for many area families who like to come back year after year to take in the familiar scenes and see what's new.

More Than Lights:

Christmas Wonderland has other attractions in addition to the lights. Children can visit the petting zoo and feed the animals. Feed is available at the Santa Claus House and costs 50 cents. While at the Santa Claus House, kids can also have their pictures taken with Santa himself. The photos cost $5 each.

Getting There:

Christmas Wonderland is located in Rock Spring Park in Alton, Illinois. To get to the park take the Clark Bridge across the Mississippi River into Alton. After crossing the bridge, turn left on US-67 North (Landmarks Boulevard) to College Avenue. The park is near the intersection of College Avenue and Washington Avenue.
