Take Dad Out for a Steak Dinner

Five Steakhouses to Fit Any Dad's Tastes

By , About.com Guide

Sure, it's a bit of a stereotype to think the perfect gift for dad is a steak dinnner. But let's face it, finding a good Father's Day gift can be quite challenging. The solution? Go back to the basics; sometimes dads really just want a great steak dinner. Here are five favorite places in St. Louis to get a steak, selected to meet the tastes and styles of lots of different dads.

1. Sam's Steakhouse

The atmosphere at Sam's is similar to a golf clubhouse. Traditional but relaxed, and definitely not trendy or stuffy. Prices are on the higher side, but at Sam's you do get what you pay for. The quality of its steaks makes up for a lack of fancy decor. Service is fast and professional, but more friendly than refined. If you're looking for a top-notch traditional steak (or veal, chicken or seafood) dish, but don't want to dress like you're going to a wedding, Sam's is a great choice.

2. Tucker's Place

I like to imaging that Tucker's mother was a classic saloon, and its father was a well respected steakhouse. Luckily for us, Tucker's got its prices from its mother, but still inherited some great steak traits from its dad. Dad will love his filet, strip steak or porterhouse, and you'll love the relaxed bar-like atmoshphere (and the bar-like prices). The Soulard location is the original, but there are also locations in West and South County.

3. Mike Shannon's Steaks & Seafood

Mike Shannon's is the intersection of steak and baseball. Plan your evening right and you and dad could be eating dinner across from Tony LaRussa or Rick Ankiel (the Cardinals play on Father's day at 1:15 p.m.). Even if you don't see a ballplayer, you can enjoy a great meal in one of the best temples to baseball this side of Cooperstown.

4. Dierdorf & Harts

If your dad's more of a football fan, take him to Dierdorf & Hart's (owned by local football legends Dan Dierdorf and Jim Hart). Although nothing in the atmosphere says "football," the steaks themselves seemed designed to please both a linebacker's appetite and a critic's palate. The 22 ounce ribeye is served with onion rings, but isn't even the largest steak on the menu. But don't worry, there's as much quality as quantity; Dierdorf & Hart's doesn't rely just on serving size to please guests. During its 25 years in business, it has consistently been near the top of reader polls as the best place in town to get a steak dinner. If you're not in the mood for steak try the lobster, crab legs or lasagna.

5. Andria's

This family-owned steakhouse has been a popular choice in the Metro East for nearly 30 years. After your dinner, buy a bottle of Andria's special steak sauce to use at home.
